Dangerous Areas in Budapest
Wondering what are the dangerous areas in Budapest? Here’s the complete list of those places and all the things you have to have in consideration when visiting magnificent Budapest.
But before we get into that list, we have to say Budapest is in general a very safe city. Even at night, its rates of criminality are small compared to many metropolises. Most of the crimes are petty thefts or something small, small scams, not real violence. Buuut, it is still a hardcore partying city and there are things to be careful of. There are no real no-go zones like in other mega cities, but there are places where, let’s say, it is better to say “no, thank you” if someone proposes a visit.
District 8 and 9: Dangerous Areas? Just a little
There are some places that have some statistics. For example, the district 8, Józsefváros (Joseph Town), has zones with a bad reputation. More crimes and a “darker” atmosphere than in the center of Budapest.
Mainly outside the Central Ring, further than the touristy zones, some streets can feel unsafe after 11 in the night. Part of the 9th district, which is Ferencváros (Francis City), has a bad reputation too.Again, not any crime statistics persé, but you sometimes hear of someone getting their things stolen with force.

Hős Street and District 10
The street called Hoss on district 10 used to be a problem, drugs and sketchy businesses. In the last few years it has almost changed to being a safe zone. It still is a place you shouldn’t go, but it is safer than before. This is one of those examples where the reputation of dangerous areas has more echo than real danger. Even if district 5 has improved in safety, it is still better not to include it in your nightlife route. You will find lots of ruin bars but not with the cool style, you know what we mean…
Dangerous “feeling” but not the reality
Sometimes you can feel, especially if you’re a girl, you can feel unsafe going on underpasses. Those pedestrian subterranean tunnels, can seem unsafe but there is not a remarkable statistic of being a hard crime place.
Inside the tram, the 4 and 6, and in some very touristy boulevards, those are magnetic entourages for the pickpocketers. So be careful on peak hours. This is where the idea of dangerous Budapest comes from, from opportunistic theft (rather than real violence). Take care of your stuff, especially when moving between bars or going back home after a long night.
Blaha Lujza is and is not safe
Plaza Blaha Lujza has a no-go reputation. A less safe environment for a nightout, but some blogs say it actually isn’t that bad as it used to be and that it is actually cool. In any case, don’t plan on going back home through this place late at night.
That’s more of an universal advice than a thing particular to Budapest. Even in the heart of the city, where everything looks under control and elegant, small scams or petty thefts do happen.

How no to find out the Dangerous areas in budapest
Rather than getting in the first taxi that comes out of the blue, we recommend using apps if you want to take a cab. Of course, avoid the dark alleys after midnight. But don’t feel oppressed by danger. Have in mind that in this city, violence and criminality is really, really uncommon. Most of the fights and problems are between drunk people, so don’t be one of them.
So, yeah, Budapest is a hardcore city, but it’s safer than many other big cities in the world and also in Europe. It has a quirky appearance mixed with its beauty, yes, but that’s not a probable reason to feel unsafe. If you spend more than a couple of days in town you’ll get it. With all this in mind, relax and have a great time in town and join ou bar hopping Budapest. Get to know more tips in our blog written by experts.
